Methodology

How this calculator works

The roadmap translates an aspirational sale price into the recurring revenue and profit that could support it. It is intentionally simple: the goal is to make the distance visible, not to predict a future transaction.

The model applies a 3.9× illustrative annual-profit multiple, calculates the MRR required at your selected margin, and compounds the growth rate you enter. The multiple is a market anchor—not a promise or appraisal.

  1. Annual profit equals MRR × 12 × profit margin.
  2. Illustrative value equals annual profit × 3.9.
  3. Target MRR equals exit goal ÷ profit margin ÷ 12 ÷ 3.9.
  4. Timeline compounds your expected annual MRR growth until target MRR is reached.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much MRR do I need for a $1 million exit?
At a 30% profit margin and a 3.9× profit multiple, the simplified target is about $71,225 in MRR. A stronger margin or multiple reduces the MRR required.
Why does profit margin matter?
Two businesses with identical revenue can produce very different cash flow. In smaller profitable SaaS acquisitions, buyers often focus heavily on the profit that revenue creates.
Is the timeline a forecast?
No. It is a mathematical growth path based on the annual rate you enter. Real growth changes over time and valuation depends on much more than MRR.
Does this calculator use AI or market APIs?
No. It uses only the visible formulas on this page and runs entirely inside your browser.
